NCHC - Newark Community Health Center 741 Broad Street
OHF Project Designer - Johnson Jones Architect
The Newark Community Health Center had purchased the old police station and was using it as a community health Center Clinic and their main office. The goal was to increase area, renovate the existing structure, and reorganize the building to function more efficiently, while providing additional space for both the Central Administration and Clinical areas.
The program consisted of:
-
24 New Exam Rooms (8 existing)
-
6 New Dental Operatories (3 existing)
-
Doctor’s Offices in each Clinical Area
-
Nursing Stations in each Clinical Area
-
New Waiting Rooms in each Clinical Area
-
Patient Administration in each Clinical Area
-
New Patient Public Toilets
-
Modern Reception Desk
-
Handicapped Accessible Main Entrance
-
Ability to quadruple number of patients served
-
Overall improvement in service delivery

I wanted to design a structure that brought life to the existing building with color and new entry while at the same time wrapping this piece of history in a modern envelope with vibrant colors and modern elements and materials. Breaking the addition into smaller proportions allowed its' mass to blend into the surrounding area but still stand out with it's modern vernacular.

Existing building renovation and new addition. Desiger OHF, Project manager Larry Johnson

This existing NCHC structure was originally a police station and now houses the Newark Community Health Center.

Lower level consist of parking, employee lounge, storage and exits from stair towers

Shows main entry into structure and how the addition wraps around existing structure to create department pods with equal travel distance access to different clinics.
